The Palo Escopeta Dump burnings resumed in January and March, 2002, covering Los Zacatitos in a toxic smog for days in January and on March 5 and 6th. Homeowners sent faxes to authorities, and meetings of concerned parties were held, but as yet the cessation of burns at the public dump has yet to occur.

Whereas the dump burns (typically starting at night and spreading to Los Zacatitos by early morning off-shore winds) have produced both health problems and death of pets at Los Zacatitos, and whereas the authorities claim that these burns are 'spontaneous' (accidental), the problem is an ongoing emergency that threatens both the real estate market, as well as the local economy and enjoyment of life at Los Zacatitos and surrondings. This smog, as documented in the photos and video clips, is worse than anything seen on a 'bad day' in Los Angeles. The need for homeowner and community organization to respond to this problem is still unresolved.
