Letters from Residents protesting Dump burning:

To: Environmental Land Management

From: Murray and Lynda Huggins
Lots #1 & 2, Manzana A, Los Zacatitos

Please let it be known that we find the dump burning intolerable. I moved here from Whittier, Calif., in 1984 to get away from unhealthy air. Now I find it worse here when the burning is taking place. I implore action to stop this dangerous situation.

We have been traveling to the Cape region since the early 70's, camping and enjoying one of the cleanest and most pristine areas on earth. About thirteen years ago we decided to buy land and build a house at Zacatitos, Punta Gorda, where we could retire from the polluted and hectic Southern California area.

We are both athletes, running, swimming, surfing, windsurfing, etc. With the toxic smoke from the burning trash Dump blowing down on our community, suffocating and choking us, burning our eyes and our lungs, our quality of life here is definitely compromised. It is not only an issue of health for the adults and children that live and visit here but also the economy of the whole region.

Please help stop the burning!

Thank you, sincerely,

RE: Trash Burning

My wife and I live in Santa Cruz de Los Zacatitos. I have been visiting the Cabo area for 25 years and bought our lot about 6 years ago. The lovely weather, beautiful beaches, and clean air were of course the main reasons.

This year, to our horror, we became aware of a trash burning dump a few miles upwind of us. On the days, or nights, that there is burning we had to close all windows and wake in the morning feeling sick from the smell and smoke. Some times the entire valley to the west of us if sull of smoke in the mornings.

It is inconceivanble that the government would allow burning of this nature in such close proximity to populated areas. It is not only objectionable, but also very dangerous to everyone's health due to the fact that the smoke is very toxic!.

I trust another solution can be found for the disposal of this trash and garbage. We all hope our neighborhood can soon be restored to it's original beauty.

Sincerely,
Dr. C. Neil Glover D.D.S. (signed)

We have been residents of the Zacatitos community for 5 years. We have been aware of increasing smoke and air pollution emanating from burning at the municipal land fill located to the north of us. In some cases air pollution has been so severe as to hamper visualization of the surrounding area.

As a retired physician, I have had considerable concern about the effects of this air pollution on the health of individuals residing in this area. I personally know of instances where it has precipitated acute repiratory distress in individuals with underlying lung problems.

We strongly urge that measures be taken immediately to stop this burning practice.

Sincerely,
Wayne Attwood, M.D., Joyce Attwood(signed)
