October 16th, 2008 -- Terri Evenson-Crain reports: "...we woke to another toxic smog experience Tuesday the 14th of October 2008. (Click on thumbnails for the bigger picture.)

"I saved a couple articles from both the Tribuna de Los Cabos and the Vos de Los Cabos dated 16 October... (where) it was reported that three people are being hospitalized from inhaling dangerous fumes from the Palo Escopeta Landfill. The three people hospitalized were trying to recycle a steel tank that contained the toxic acid. (The front page headline reads "Utilizan el relleno sanitario para el deposito de residuos pelgrosos".)

"What should concern everyone beyond the continual burning of the landfill, is the fact that toxic wastes are being taken to this landfill.

"Also see www.loscaboscontaminacion.com, updated yesterday, which stated the municipality responded quickly."

With many of us scheduled to return to Los Zacatitos and the East Cape for the traditional 'winter-spring season', this news is troubling. Earlier in 2008, and extending back to 2007, we witnessed and experienced several toxic smog burns at the municipal dump which forced residents to flee to safer areas. At meetings with municipal authorities, we were assured that further recurrences (of burning refuse) would not be tolerated and that plans were in progress for upgraded refuse disposal and Cabo-wide recycling programs.

What do you think happened to all those promises, and where is the information? (A.R.)

Mayan Hotel plans for the East Cape are put on hold

Beach adjoining Zacatitos and Santa Cruz de los Zacatitos - click to enlarge in separate window According to the Gringo Gazette August 4, 2008 issue, the Mayan Palace Resort that was scheduled for the East Cape, just immediately north-east along the beach from Zacatitos will not be build until "This governor is out of office", resulting in a "$850 million loss for Cabo". The article states that "When the company bought the land, everyone who has bought property out there (East Cape) either as a speculator in hopes of appreciation, or even people just wanting some services out there like a paved road and electricity, were overjoyed. Surely a powerful company like Grupo Mayan would be the catalyst for change on the East Cape, they thought. Nope. The planners at Mayan Palace are so discouraged with the political climate in Los Cabos that they are putting their plans on hold."

Thomas Alley submitted the following August 26th letter that he received from Daniel J. Melcher, Snell Real Estate, San Jose del Cabo:

"You might have heard but in case you have not, the Mayan Palace backed off their proposed $850,000,000 project on the East Cape until the present Baja Sur government is out of office. At least that's the reason they claim in media. It seems somewhat valid as the present government seems to be the least ept of all the inept in recent memory. I'm sure you can find something regarding it online. The governor here, Narcisco Agundez, will be out of office in May of 2011. It's our opinion that this media coverage was simply a tactic of the Mayan to apply pressure on the powers that be in Mexico City . Of course from that perspective we see the Mayan's announcement as a positive factor."

East Cape Recycling Center
at Los Zacatitos needs your help and support

Recycling Center Los Zacatitos - click for poster Each Saturday from 9 a.m. to 12 noon, at the parking lot across the main Los Zacatitos gate (next to Punta Gorda) a recycling site is offering to collect plastics, glass, metal, batteries and to connect residents with a locally available household garbage pick up service offered by Johnny Ortega and his wife Elisabeth.

The East Cape Recycling Center - serving not only Los Zacatitos but other nearby coastal communities - needs your support in the form of donations going towards recycling costs, transportation, and covering transport of recycled materials and plastics to La Paz.

A culture of recycling takes time and Los Zacatitos promises to be one of the new examples of community efforts working in the East Cape. Your on-site Saturday donations will make all the difference and assure the continuation of this valuable service!

Until alternatives are found, Terri Evenson and Gene Crain are still the primary resources for recycling glass. Their volunteer effort and out of pocket expenses have resulted in a steady stream of clear & amber glass sent to the Los Cabos 'Glass Factory'. Note: if you deposit glass (or plastics), please wash out the containers before dropping them off!

Household (unsorted) garbage pick-up ($5 per large bag) is now available on Wednesdays - after 2:30 p.m.. We encourage you to sign up if you have not already done so. This service can only be viable for the operators if enough people sign up. Contact Johnny Ortega at e-mail JohnnyOrtega@hotmail.com to sign up.

"This is a photo of our mural that the children ages 4 to 6 at the La Playita kinder painted to PROMOTE AWARENESS TO PROTECT OUR ENVIRONMENT. This painting is one of 2 thus far where we are working with the children to educate and introduce recycling. The words read LOS NINOS CON CORAJE, SOMOS EL FUTURO, THE COURAGEOUS CHILDREN, WE ARE THE FUTURE.

"We have a serious problem with the San Jose del Cabo landfill burning sending toxic smoke into the air near our home. It is continually being updated as our grassroot movement evolves. Our goal is to introduce recycling/ sustainable living to the Los Cabos area, thereby sending less waste to the landfill."

Ecological Urgencies: Meeting between residents and Mayor Rene Nunez Cosio held on Tuesday May 6th

Los Zacatitos community meets Mayor Rene Nunez at City Hall - May 6, 2008 - click for photo pageLos Zacatitos and East Cape residents, real estate brokers, environmentalists and teachers - approximately twenty in all - met newly installed Mayor Rene Nunez Cosio and his staff at San Jose del Cabo City Hall offices on May 6th 1 p.m. to discuss with the city administration our ongoing Palo Escopeta Dump burn problems, recycling, education and the environment. Three TV station crews were also on hand to report on this event which had been organized by Terri Evenson Crain and Lianne Armitage Bryan (see call to attend below). Gene Crain set up a information kiosk in front of City Hall with posters and information hand outs. The kiosk attracted a lot of attention and interested visitors.

Click here for Gene Crain's account of the kiosk display and more photos of meeting and newspaper articles.

The meeting with Mayor Nunez Cosio was remarkably frank and wide ranging and covered a variety of ecological and recycling concerns. The urgency of having a meeting had been underscored by the recent April 25th dump burn and toxic smog event. Issues of immediate and long-term consequence were presented by a number of speakers. Gabriel Olvera of the Ecological Department was there, as well as Real Estate agents - brokers Steve Deutch and Jim Hart, both of whom have long standing interests and relationships with Los Zacatitos and the East Cape. Educators from the kinder at La Playita attended as well as representatives of a number of organizations. Approximately 20 people were joined by 5 mayoral officers and 5 media reporters for this one hour meeting.

Organizer Terri Evenson Crain introduced the topics to the major and spoke about education and the future. Co-organizer Lianne Armitage Bryan displayed a video of the recent dump burn. The author (Al Razutis - webmaster of this site) presented the major with a pictorial archive dating back to the 2001 municipal dump burns. Other individuals spoke with regards the urgent ecological issues facing San Jose and especially Los Zacatitos and the East Cape, and also with regards the greater issues of Los Cabos refuse, recycling and pollution.

Mayor Nunez Cosio was receptive and engaging on the issues brought to the meeting. He outlined his new administrations 100 ays 10 point plan in which ecology and refuse/recycling would figure prominently. He promissed to immediately investigate security and conditions at the Palo Escopeta dump, the site of so many previous burnings.

People who attended this remarkable and important meeting with our new administration remarked to this writer that they were pleased how friendly, informed and committed Mayor Nunez had been at the meeting. We all look forward to further updates arising from this meeting. ( < click thumbnail for photo page of meeting)

Municipal Dump burns again spewing toxic smog at Los Zacatitos April 24-25th

Photo of Los Zacatitos and Municipal Dump Burn of April 25, 2008 - photos by Al Razutis
Residents of Los Zacatitos awoke April 25th to the presence of toxic smog covering the area and stretching north-east along the coast. The Palo Escopeta Municipal Dump was on fire again and the offshore winds had deposited the (toxic) smog on the costal communities again! Some residents put on gas masks to do morning chores (photo left), and many residents left the location for the day to avoid poisoning their respiratory systems.
