Ecological concerns - Sea of Cortez

Regularly we feature articles of interest on ecology, recycling, and ocean / land environment, especially as it relates to our coastal communities on the East Cape. We live at the intersection of ocean and land and our enjoyment comes from both.

Susan Beard (Sube), whose photographs are also in the 'Environs' section of this site suggests adding the following web site for our informational interest: www.seawatch.org

Open pit gold mine at Paredones Amarillos in the Sierra de la Laguna Biosphere Reserve

Call for letters of protest

editor@buildinginbaja.com wrote:

"As many of you may know, Vista Gold mining company is seeking permission to develop a massive open pit gold mine at Paredones Amarillos in the Sierra de la Laguna Biosphere Reserve above Todos Santos. This project will directly challenge our community. We are being asked to risk the regional aquifers, the turtle sanctuaries, the whale coastal feeding areas and our oasis. Please help protect Todos Santos and the Sierra de la Laguna Biosphere Reserve. (For more information see: VistaGoldNo.com and ParedonesAmarillosNo.com)

Paradones Amarillo mining company just filed for the change of zoning for the development of an open pit gold mine. Different government agencies are in the process of making a decision NOW. We need everyone to send letters to the federal and state agencies looking at this issue to express opposition to the project. Please help and get as many others to participate in this letter writing campaign.

Please rinse out and separate the paper, aluminum, tin cans, batteries. Please NOTE: Some Glass, and all Plastics are no longer accepted.

Plans to pave the 'back road' from Zacatitos to La Laguna?

The typical condition of the 'back road' from Los Zacatitos to La Cholla - San Jose Del Cabo Jim Hart, Vantage Realty Broker, writes (in Dec. 09) that plans are underway to pave the 'back road' (as distinct from the 'beach road') from Los Zacatitos to the paved road joining La Laguna to La Choya and San Jose del Cabo.

He writes:
"I keep hearing rumours that the road will begin paving in January. First I heard it at Zac's Bar and Grill. Then I spoke with a family member who gave up a piece of land as easement; then I spoke with an attorney who is directly involved with the construction, then a banker who works as an executive, who is in charge of the funds ( that are in the bank ) that are there to build out the road. Now I am told by a reliable source that the existing back road will be surfaced, the way it is to La Laguna, then the real 4 lane road will begin construction within 2 years."

Next full moon will be March 29th - best moon/sea 'photo ops' will be the day before at sunset

Facts about the moon, from the web news wires:

"The moon makes a trip around Earth every 29.5 days. But the orbit is not a perfect circle. One portion is about 31,000 miles (50,000 km) closer to our planet than the farthest part, so the moon's apparent size in the sky changes."
