Ecological Enforcement - PROFEPA and SEMARNAT

For the last severa years (2007-2008) there were a number of homeowners who were visited by PROFEPA enforcement officers conducting investigation of compliance with environmental regulations in construction or development of East Cape and Los Zacatitos properties. Some times these visits were met by 'f*** off' (which does disservice to our community) or simply ignoring the inspection requests. Well, it's time to read what a lawyer posted on the 'Baja Pony Express' in the service of explaining what these organizations do, and what they can do when faced with 'non compliance' with environmental regulations. Click here to read the article. It is never too late to form an active 'association' representing common goals and ideals. However, as the chronologies will reveal, 'consensus', however difficult to achieve, is not the issue. What is the issue is timely 'action towards a common goal' and legal representation.

Road Repair - Public Services in San Jose del Cabo

The typical condition of the 'back road' from Los Zacatitos to La Cholla - San Jose Del Cabo Complaints about the 'road conditions' have been with us as long as Los Zacatitos has been around. Typically, these complaints go 'nowhere'. As recently as this past Easter, the roads (beach road and desert back road) were graded for 'Semana Santa' and will predictably deteriorate in a matter of weeks.

Lynn Cramner (e-mail: lynnmargaret2002@yahoo.com ) sent in the following information:
"It takes 20 calls to Public Services - Road Repair at telephone number 624-14-20624 to get the municipal authorities to act on road improvement and grading of the back (desert road).

For beach complaints contact Javier Mungia, ZAFAMAT, at telephone number 624-10-50904."

She adds: "I got the above info from Lou Quaccia; his care takers, Rafa and Josefina have a lot of knowledge on getting the municipal Mexican government to help out here. Contact Lou, if you need more info at lquaccia@gmail.com."

'Rocks of Punta Gorda' - New photos by Susan "Sube" Beard

Click for 'Rocks of Punta Gorda' by Susan 'Sube' BeardPunta Gorda at Los Zacatitos is a well-known landmark, rising out of the ocean (many millennia ago) with fossils inbedded in its stones. It is also the limit of the Bay of San Jose (the other border being Punta Palmilla) and the beginning of the 'East Cape'.

Local photographer Susan "Sube" Beard has captured some remarkable details of this landmark in her photo essay titled 'Rocks of Punta Gorda'. Click on thumbnail at left or the title link to view her beautiful photos.

ATV's and vehicles on the beach create nuisance for sea life, beach goers and home owners

file photo of previous sign at Santa Cruz Arroyo Los ZacatitosA number of Los Zacatitos homeowners have recently complained that the number of ATVs (all terrain vehicles) on the beach have become 'difficult to tolerate'. While there are many who would declare (as in the past) that 'nobody can tell me where to ride', the simple fact is that vehicles are prohibitted under Mexican Federal Law from the 'federal zone', meaning, the beach.

These prohibitions to vehicles are rarely, if ever, enforced aound Zacatitos by the police, but the prohibitions are in effect. So, before we do another update 'outing' people and their vehicles driving the beach, perhaps we could inform our visitors and neighbors, and especially rentors who come for a weekend or week, about not driving on the beach. If the reason of a 'federal law' is not enough, then perhaps the notion that we at Zacatitos have periodic turtle egg laying areas on the beaches should strike a chord of reason as to why driving on the beach is a 'bad idea' and should be avoided.

Updated January 10th: 'Maybe we need a new sign?'
